October 17th, 2004: Workshop on Raising kids in America with Ladonna Harris Niang M.Ed. Ladonna is a child specialist, Managing director of Infusion Wellness Services. She can be reached at 832 651 7701 or infuseu@aol.com . During the workshop, Ladonna stressed the importance of communication in the difficult task of raising kids in America, where beating is considered unacceptable. However, according to Child Protective Services, it is acceptable to spank a child (but no beating). Here are some ways, Ladonna left us, on how to protect our children:
Incorporate the American culture into your African culture Stay on top of what your child is doing: meet with teachers, see who their friends are, meet their friends' parents Talk to your children - Communicate, Communicate, Communicate! Both parents must share the responsibility of raising Never think that it is not important to let your child know who they are, their heritage, their religion, and instill your values in them because African history is not taught here in basic schooling. Open yourself up for the experience.
On behalf of the Senegalese Community, we would like to thank Ladonna for such an impressive and informative presentation, handled with pure professionalism. Thanks!
July 8th 2004: Kids Outing The picture on the top right was taken during the Kids Outing Day, on July 8th 2004, at the Celebration Station, in the Southwest side of Houston. A special day for the kids. You could tell by the big smiles on their faces, running up & down, playing & winning big time, that they had the fun of their life. Even the adults supervising them had fun as much as they did.
July 18th 2004: General meeting The second picture shows Mrs. Joan O Nwuli, an attorney at law, doing a presentation about the U.S. immigration laws & issues that we face every day. A Special "thank you" to Mrs. Nwuli , by the way, for her willingness to help and her collaborative relationship with the Senegalese Community. The meeting took place on July 18th 2004 at Hilton Hotel.
The third picture shows the Board Members brainstorming right before the general meeting.
